Tales of the West

Cyrus Walker • Vanessa Valero • Maeve Eichelberger

This August, MiXX atelier is exhibiting a group show, Tales of the West, featuring work from artists Cyrus Walker, Maeve Eichelberger, and Vanessa Valero. A new artist to the MiXX family, painter Cyrus Walker crafts witty, stylized tableaus of a recognizable landscape of tropes he calls ‘The Imagined West.’ Informed by his career as a graphic designer, Walker uses a contemporary lens to explore the iconography of the American West as it’s been conceptualized throughout history. In contrast, Maeve Eichelberger’s acrylic saddle sculptures seek to expand cultural notions of who the West is shaped by, and who belongs there. Finished in everything from translucent neon pinks and delicately etched floral motifs, to photographic overlays of urban landscapes, Eichelberger’s work makes the case that the West is for everyone. Finally, textile artist Vanessa Valero hand-tufts imaginary landscapes that elegantly capture the intangible aura of the mountains. A traveler whose pursuit of her craft has taken her from her native Colombia to Scandinavia, British Columbia, and beyond, Valero’s work is steeped in the spirit of the mountains that make her feel at home, even when she’s far from it.
